Je Suis Charlie
Dear Mom and Dad,
By now you've probably heard about the attack at Charlie Hebdo's offices in Paris on Wednesday. As far as my safety goes, there's no need to worry because I am currently in Marseille. I was recently staying in Paris, but my apartment was located in the sixteenth district, and this took place in the eleventh. Because I am now in Marseille, I am nearly 800 km away, so I am physically fine. I am extremely shocked and upset that this type of thing is humanly possible. The hunt for the gunmen and terrorists may have ended, but the fight to uphold the right of free speech is far from over. This is something that allows each and every individual to freely express their personal beliefs; a sacred human right worth fighting for. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states as the nineteenth article, "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." I will never understand the absurd reasoning behind violent crimes of this nature, but I truly hope the world can soon recover and grow from this horrible experience.
Hope all is well at home.
Love,
Ellie
